Explore the exhilarating 594-meter cave within Cave Stream Scenic Reserve, a standout natural wonder of Canterbury.
Embark on two brisk walks from the reserve carpark to reach each cave entrance. Venture through the twisting, pitch-dark passage that connects both ends of the cave, offering a thrilling adventure.
Total time: 1 hour round-trip, with each track taking just 30 minutes.
The upstream track leads through a stunning karst landscape featuring solution holes, rillenkarren, and sculpted rock formations. Meanwhile, the other track descends to a terrace overlooking the cave’s outflow, where Cave Stream meets Broken River.
CAUTION ! : Be mindful of cave warnings—safety is paramount. Proper equipment is essential for traversing the cave safely.
Nearby limestone formations served as the backdrop for scenes in ‘Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe’.
Inside the cave, encounter a 3-meter waterfall at the inlet, conquerable with care even by fit, inexperienced cavers. Safety tip: Each caving party should carry at least two reliable lights per person, spare batteries, warm clothing, and sturdy footwear.
For a smoother journey, enter from the outflow end and move upstream against the stream’s flow. Navigate small waterfalls with assistance from a ladder and chain, and marvel at the cave’s unique geological features.
Access to the reserve is straightforward via SH73 between the Broken River road bridge and Craigieburn Forest Park entrance.
Before your visit, monitor cave water levels closely—depth can vary, potentially reaching waist-high levels. Exercise caution during high water conditions or extreme cold from nearby mountain snow.
This cave adventure promises an invigorating experience, best suited for adventurers ready to explore its wonders.
